The ryoba cuts on the pull stroke, which lets the plate stay thin and the kerf narrow. One edge crosscuts, the other rips. When the teeth dull, the blade unclips and a new one goes on; the handle stays in service.

Materials
A two hundred forty millimetre ryoba blade, impulse-hardened, crosscut teeth along one edge and rip along the other, on a rattan-wrapped hardwood handle. Replacement blades are available.
Care
Impulse-hardened teeth cannot be re-filed. Once it stops cutting, the blade is replaced rather than sharpened. Keep it in the sleeve it ships in — the teeth will chip against other steel loose in a drawer.
